Manchester United exited the Champions League with a whimper on Tuesday evening, falling to a pathetic 1-0 defeat at the hands of Bayern Munich at Old Trafford.

Kinglsey Coman’s second-half strike condemned the hosts to their fate, with Erik ten Hag’s men unable to produce any sort of response in a tepid affair.

It’s fair to say that not many people believed Man Utd could pull off a shock at Old Trafford before kick-off, the Red Devils heading into the game off the back of a 3-0 defeat to Bournemouth in the Premier League last Saturday.

While Man Utd supporters will have been relieved that their defence looked more rigid than in previous Champions League games during a lacklustre first half, they would have hoped for a little more creativity and ingenuity in the final third.

All in all, it was not a breathtaking first 45 minutes at Old Trafford.

As if things weren’t hard enough for the Red Devils, Harry Maguire and Luke Shaw picked up injuries during the first half, further depleting a threadbare Man Utd side.

35-year-old Jonny Evans now had the task of dealing with Harry Kane in a crucial second half.

With very few options on the bench, there was little that Erik ten Hag could do to change things for a Man Utd side bereft of confidence.

As the game wore on and the minutes ticked away, the hosts were struggling to muster any real attacking threat whatsoever.

In the end, it was hardly surprising that Kinglsey Coman popped up with the winner in the second half, firing beyond Andre Onana to confirm Man Utd’s European exit.

There was understandable frustration after the final whistle, the Red Devils woefully underperforming on the European stage this season.

And there were more questions for Ten Hag to answer after another dismal display that saw Man Utd limp out of Europe.
