Alejandro Gaviria Uribe

Alejandro Gaviria Uribe is an engineer and economist from Colombian. From 2012 to 2018, Alejandro Gaviria Uribe was also presented as Minister of Health and Social Protection.

Early life

In 1965, Alejandro Gaviria Uribe was born in Santiago, Chile. Likewise, he is 56 years old. He was born to his father Juan Felipe Gaviria and his mother Cecilia Uribe Florez. Additionally, his father was the former mayor of Medellin. Thus, when he was 2, his parents returned to his native Colombia. There are no details related to Gaviria’s siblings and he might be a single child of his parents.

Additionally, he attended Antioquia School of Engineering related to Civil Engineering. But, he later developed his entire profession as an economist. And, he attended Universidad De Los Andes and completed a master’s degree. Moreover, he doctorate in economics at the University of California. Similarly, he went on to do a Ph.D. in Economics in California.

Career

Previously, Alejandro Gaviria worked as an engineer at Suramericana de Seguros. Later, he became an economist at the National Federation of Coffee Growers. Moving on, as head of the division, he went to the National Planning Department. Moreover, he worked as a researcher for the Inter-American Development Bank. He returned to Colombia as a researcher for Fedesarrollo, in 2000. He became the Deputy Director of that think tank, in the following year. In 2002, he returned to National Planning and the change of government.

But, this time as Deputy Director of Santiago Montenegro. Until 2004, he was there and he left to pursue academia at the Faculty of Economics. Thus, he went at the Universidad de Los Andes. Additionally, in the newspaper El Espectador, he was dean of that faculty and member of the editorial board. In it, he publishes opinion columns. In August 2012, he was appointed as Minister of Health by President Juan Manuel Santos. Also, in August 2014,  appointed as ratified.

In 2018, he finally returned to academic work. Later, he was elected by the Universidad de Los Andes as rector, on May 22, 2019. Besides, he has written articles, books, and essays on economics, development, and literature.  Eventually, he received the Juan Luis Londoño Medal, in 2007.

More about career

Likewise, the Simón Bolívar Journalism Award for Best Opinion Article, in 2009.  Finally, in 2018, he received the Order of Boyacá. Thus, it was the highest decoration that the Colombian government awards. From 2010 -to 2018, he was Minister of Health.

He looked after improving the financial sustainability of the Colombian health system. He has written books like Today is always still, Someone has to take the opposite. Also, wrote Another end of the world is possible, We don’t even have the words. His net worth is still not revealed and still under review.

Personal life

The marriage date is not revealed yet but, Alejandro Gaviria is married to economist Carolina Soto Losada. His wife has held various positions in the Treasury portfolio. Additionally, also a co-director of the Banco De La Republica De Colombia. Together, they are blessed with 2 children named Mariana and Tomas Gaviria. Undoubtedly, the 4 together have been living a delightful life.
