Ally Maki, known for her role in Apple TV’s “The Big Door Prize,” grew up as one of the few Asian Americans in her small town. She tried various activities in search of a sense of community, including joining French Club and baseball, but ultimately ended up quitting due to feeling out of place. Maki used these experiences as inspiration to create the Asian American Girl Club (AAGC), a fashion and lifestyle brand, and an online community to redefine what it means to be a modern Asian American woman. During a recent interview, she spoke about creating the AAGC community, navigating stereotypes and othering in Hollywood, and her fellow Asian American creatives who inspire her most.
Maki started the AAGC with no concrete plan, but rather a desire for it to exist. The brand has since released various iterations of its stylish merchandise, built friendships among young Asian Americans across the country, and created a positive and inclusive space for individuals to celebrate cultural joys and find solace in shared hardships. Like other members, Maki has formed close friendships with fellow Asian American actors through the AAGC.
