Anthony Don Mitchell was punished by being kept in the kitchen freezer of a jail, where he eventually froze to death.
Mitchell, who had a history of drug abuse, was detained on January 12 after his cousin requested that authorities check on him for welfare because he was babbling about heaven and hell in his home and appeared to be having a mental breakdown. Mitchell had a history of drug abuse.
A spokesperson for Alabama Attorney General Steve Marshall, Cameron Mixon, said the office is aware of the situation and that the Federal Bureau of Investigation and Alabama Law Enforcement Agency are looking into it.
After the investigation is finished, the office, according to him, will ensure that any necessary actions are taken.
Anthony Don Mitchell Death: Mentally Ill Man Died In Jail
As per the lawsuit filed by the man’s family, the mentally ill man froze to death in an Alabama jail. They claim he was kept naked in a concrete cell and believe he was also kept in a freezer or other frigid environment.
The lawsuit claims that Anthony Don Mitchell, 33, was declared dead several hours after arriving at a hospital emergency room with a body temperature of 72 degrees (22 degrees Celsius).
He was transferred from the Walker County Jail, where he had spent the previous two weeks behind bars, to the hospital on January 26.

According to the lawsuit lodged on Monday in federal court by Mitchell’s mother, an emergency room physician who attempted to revive Mitchell believes that hypothermia was the ultimate cause of his demise.

According to the lawsuit, a jail video reveals Mitchell was kept naked in an isolation cell with a concrete floor.
The lawsuit assumes that Mitchell was also placed in the jail kitchen’s walk-in freezer or another extremely chilly location and left for hours due to his extremely low body temperature.
The sheriff’s office is also charged with covering up in the lawsuit. After Mitchell’s passing, the sheriff’s office said he was awake and conscious when he left the facility.

As per the statement from Jackson, Fikes & Brakefield, the sheriff’s office contacted the State Bureau of Investigation to request the investigation following Mitchell’s death as per the standard procedure.
