Billie Eilish Takes a Break from Social Media: “How much was a lie that I was reading?”
Billie Eilish recently revealed on the “Conan O’Brien Needs A Friend” podcast that she deleted all social media apps off her phone. As someone who “grew up in the perfect time of the internet,” Eilish explained that most of her youth was in an era that wasn’t too “internet-y” that she didn’t get to enjoy her childhood. However, being a part of the inception of iPhones, social media, and the topics discussed on said platforms eventually turned her off from social media.
Eilish was disturbed that as she gained popularity, she started seeing videos, posts, and comments about her online, some of which were negative and hurtful. She even recalled a time when a video about her popped up while she was with her boyfriend, Jesse Rutherford. “It was like, ‘Billie Eilish is a horrible person.’ And then it was a very serious video of why,” she explained. “The person seemed in the right headspace and was saying all of these things. It’s just such a crazy reality that I live in. That’s my name. That’s me. Oh, interesting. Okay. Alright.”
Eilish’s experience on social media isn’t unique. Selena Gomez recently announced her withdrawal from TikTok amid fan speculation of an alleged feud between her and Hailey Bieber. Similarly, Tom Holland took a break from social media in August 2022, though he took a moment to celebrate Zendaya’s return to the red carpet by commenting with a heart-eye emoji under one of her recent Instagram posts.

As more and more celebrities slowly step away from social media, it’s evident that social media platforms have a considerable impact on people’s lives, especially public personalities. Unfortunately, as much as social media positively impacts people’s lives, it can also become a breeding ground for bullying and mental health issues, giving prominence to the #mentalhealthawareness movement.

In conclusion, Billie Eilish’s decision to take this step back from social media shows that celebrities are human, just like us. The negativity that they face online can take a toll on their mental health, and sometimes it’s essential to step back and prioritize one’s well-being over social media.
