The day after his interview hit the newsstands, Koy was back on the stage. But not just any stage – the standup comedy stage. He made a veiled reference to the backlash he received for his Golden Globes monologue.
“Marshmallows, man. They’re tasty, but oh boy, are they soft,” he quipped to his audience at St. Louis’ Stifel Theatre on January 12. This, according to Variety. “I’m from a different era. I see the world changing. I get it, but can’t we just laugh at ourselves?”
His remarks were met with applause. He then added, as reported by the outlet, “I bet none of you guys watched it. And I’m kinda glad. Oh, my God. It feels good to be in this country. We can say what we want. No need to be sorry about it.”
In the midst of the controversy, a couple of past award show hosts jumped to Koy’s defense. Steve Martin, who co-hosted the Oscars with Alec Baldwin in 2010, was one of them. “I respect anyone who steps on stage to host a live awards show,” he posted on Threads. “It’s a tough gig. Not for the faint-hearted. I know because I’m still nauseous from the last time I did it.”
Whoopi Goldberg agreed with Martin. “Hosting gigs are brutal,” she commented on The View. “If you’ve never been in these rooms and you’re suddenly thrust out there, it’s a gamble.”
