Cindy Williams is a late American actress and producer. Cindy Williams is widely recognized for her roles as Shirley Feeney on the television sitcoms “Happy Days” (1975–1979), and “Laverne & Shirley” (1976–1982).

Early Life

Cindy Williams was born in Los Angeles, California, the United States, on the 22nd of August 1947. At the age of 75, she passed away and had a birth sign of Leo. She holds the American nationality and belongs to English-Italian ethnicity.

The names of her parents are Bachard William and Francesca Bellini. By profession, her father was an electronic technician. In addition, she had a sister named Carol Ann. When she was just a year old, her family moved to Dallas and returned to Los Angeles when she was ten years old.


She completed her high school graduation from Birmingham High School in 1965. Later, she went to  Los Angeles City College where she majored in theatre.

Cindy Williams – Death

On the 25th of January 2023, she died in Los Angeles, following a brief illness. Williams was buried in Forest Lawn Memorial Park in the Hollywood Hills, Los Angeles.

Professional Career

Cindy Williams started her career by landing national commercials, which included Foster Grant sunglasses and TWA. She made her acting debut in the 1969 ABC comedy series “Room 222.’

Later, she starred in a couple of TV series such as “Nanny and the Professor”  and “Love, American Style” during the early 1970s. Moreover, she made her big screen debut in the 1970 film “Gas-s-s-s” playing the role of Marissa.

Alongside her professional career, she also honed her skills at the Actors Studio West. She grabbed opportunities to perform in big film roles. Moreover, she starred in George Cukor’s “Travels with My Aunt” (1972), George Lucas’s “American Graffiti” (1973), and Francis Ford Coppola’s “The Conversation” (1974).

She auditioned for the role of Princess Leia in Lucas’ “Star Wars,” but Carrie Fisher was hired instead due to Lucas’ desire for an unknown cast, similar to American Graffiti.

In 1975, she played Shirley Feeney, a fun-loving brewery bottle capper, in an episode of “Happy Days” with Penny, alongside her best friend and roommate, Laverne De Fazio. From 1976 until 1982, she starred in the highly successful series “Laverne & Shirley.” At one time during its run, the show was the highest-rated television show.

Rose to Fame

Williams received praise for her portrayal of Shirley Feeney. She departed the program after the second episode of the eighth and final season due to pregnancy with her first child. Hanna-Barbera created the short-lived Saturday morning animated series “Laverne & Shirley in the Army” (1981-82) in response to the success of the TV series. In 1979, she returned to play Laurie in “More American Graffiti” a sequel to ‘American Graffiti.’

She appeared in the 1985 ABC sitcom pilot “Joanna,” which aired as a special on April 30. Moreover, she co-starred with Fred Ward and Harry Dean Stanton in the 1981 sci-fi comedy “UFORIA.”

In 1990, she appeared in an unsold CBS pilot adapted from the 1989 film “Steel Magnolias.” She was selected as M’Lynn Eatenton, a character formerly performed by Sally Field. In 1990, she appeared in the short-lived sitcom “Normal Life.” Later, in 1993-94, she reunited with ‘Laverne & Shirley’ producers Thomas L. Miller and Robert L. Boyett to star in their family sitcom “Getting By” (1993-94).

Later Career

Moreover, she also guest-starred on the TV shows including two episodes of “8 Simple Rules.” On December 11, 2007, she made her Broadway debut as daffy Mrs. Tottendale in ‘The Drowsy Chaperone’ at the Marquis Theatre, succeeding Jo Anne Worley in the part formerly portrayed by Georgia Engel.

Williams and Penny Marshall reunited for the TV series “Sam & Cat” in the episode ‘#SalmonCat’ (2013). Her memoir, “Shirley, I Jest!” (co-written with Dave Smitherman), was released in 2015. In the same year, she took part in celebrity branding for the senior citizen program Visiting Angels.

Williams received the TV Land Award for Working Stiff of the Year for ‘Laverne & Shirley’ (1976). She also received a Walk of Fame star for her contributions to television.
