Ham took part in the 1997 NBA Slam Dunk Contest and played for the 2004 NBA champion Detroit Pistons. His powerful slams became him a crowd favorite while he was with the Milwaukee Bucks, earning him the nicknames “Dunkin Darvin” and “Ham Slamwich,” which he kept for the rest of his career.

Ham participated in the Dominican Republic program in 2015 as well as the Johannesburg, South Africa-based Basketball Without Borders program in 2005. Ham served as a studio commentator for the Dallas Mavericks’ postseason run on Fox Sports Southwest in 2006. In four consecutive postseason trips, he helped the Hawks, most notably in 2015 when they advanced to the Eastern Conference finals. Additionally, he relocated to Milwaukee in 2018, where Mike Budenholzer won the 2019–2020 NBA Coach of the Year award. Ham helped the team put on its best performance since 1972. The Milwaukee Bucks won their second NBA championship under Ham’s leadership in 2020–21, defeating the Phoenix Suns in the NBA Finals in six games to claim their first championship since 1971. Ham was appointed to serve as the Los Angeles Lakers’ head coach on June 3, 2022.
