In an interview with Entertainment Weekly during the promotion for I’m Glad My Mom Died, the iCarly star discussed her professional relationship with her mother and said that she needed to face the emotional and psychological abuse she endured as a child performer.

Her daughter was still a Nickelodeon celebrity at the time. Debbie McCurdy’s breast cancer came back despite believing she had beaten it years before. According to Hollywood Life, McCurdy shared details of her mother’s difficulties in a 2011 Wall Street Journal article titled Off-Camera, My Mom’s Fight With Cancer.

After Debbie McCurdy passed away in 2013, her daughter was inspired to write the one-woman play “I’m Glad My Mom Died.”

The play began in February 2020, but because the coronavirus pandemic delayed live theater productions for more than a year, it was never able to complete its run.

McCurdy also acknowledged that she used alcohol on her own website for a while, but that wasn’t her only enemy. According to Elite Daily, she also admitted to having an eating condition.

McCurdy grew up in a modestly wealthy Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints family in Garden Grove, California. Debbie McCurdy homeschooled her and her three elder brothers.

Mark McCurdy, her father, held two jobs. Jennette discovered that her dad was not her biological father in her 20s.

McCurdy has admitted that her mother subjected her to mental and sexual abuse. My mom’s emotions were so unstable that it was like walking a tightrope every day, she revealed in an interview with People magazine. McCurdy claims that when she was six years old, her mother encouraged her to pursue acting because she wanted to be a performer and help financially support the family.

She explained how her mother introduced her to calorie tracking when she was 11 years old and how her mother was obsessed with making her a star. She further disclosed that her mother regularly performed vaginal and breast checks on her up until she was never allowed to take a shower alone.
