Elly and his wife have been married for many years. Cynthia and Eriya Tumwine Junior are the couple’s two children. Elly also tied the knot for the second time with Jolly Tumwine.

The newlyweds’ wedding reception was held at the State House. The wedding took place on February 7, 1987, at the State House in Entebbe, with only twenty guests invited, and no pre- or post-wedding ceremonies were held.

Eriya was a Makerere University student studying information technology. Eriya and his companions had been on the road. When they were attacked, they had decided to return to Kampala that evening. Eriya was hurt in the attack.

Mama Kawempe raised him for the first 18 months of his life after his mother, Joy Mulembe, a prominent NRA officer, died during childbirth. He developed epilepsy after being taken to his aunt’s residence in Kazo, Kampala, in 1985.
