John was born to his parents, William Redwood and Amy Emma. He was born in Dover. His father was an accountant and a company secretary, and his mother was the manager of a shoe shop.
The politician also had an elder sister, Jennifer, who died as a baby in 1949. His family used to live in a council house, and buying a new home was a big breakthrough.
On 20 April 1974, John was married to Gail Felicity Chippington in Chipping Norton. In July 2003, they got separated after 28 years of their marriage.
