On March 8, he flew from Mumbai to New York via Frankfurt, Germany. Cardoz was taken to Mountainside Medical Center in Montclair, New Jersey, a week ago with a fever and later tested positive for Covid-19, according to the statement.

Furthermore, at the time of his death, Cardoz was a partner in the Bombay Sweet Shop ‘O Pedro’ and The Bombay Canteen in India. In 1997, he co-founded Tabla with legendary restaurateur Danny Meyer’s Union Square Hospitality Group. Critics lauded the Manhattan location. It was decommissioned in 2010. Famous pals from the food and television professions both mourned his death.

Meyer wrote, “Love you so much @floydcardoz,” calling him a “beautiful human being.” Furthermore, the two collaborated for 17 years. At Tabla, they also praised Cardoz’s new Indian cuisine, which combined exquisite aromas and spices from his birthplace with Western techniques.

Padma Lakshmi, the host of the Bravo cooking competition series “Top Chef,” commended Tabla’s success and conveyed condolences to Cardoz’s loved ones, particularly his wife and business partner, Barkha.

“He had an impish smile, an innate need to make those around him happy, and a delicious touch,” tweeted Lakshmi.

Cardoz was described as a “inspiration to chefs around the world” by the “Top Chef” Twitter account, which offered condolences. Cardoz published a photo of himself in a medical gown on his own Instagram feed, writing:

“Sincere apologies everyone. I am sorry for causing undue panic around my earlier post. I was feeling feverish and hence as a precautionary measure, admitted myself into hospital in New York. And, I was hugely anxious about my state of health and my post was highly irresponsible causing panic in several quarters. I returned to New York on March 8th via Frankfurt.”

Professional Career of Indian -American Chef Floyd Cardoz

Cardoz went to New York City in 1988 and began working under Chef Gray Kunz at Lespinasse four years later, rising from chef de partie to executive sous chef. Then, in 1997, he departed to work for Union Square Hospitality Group, where he established the pioneering fine-dining Indian restaurant Tabla, as well as El Verano Taquera and North End Grill. Similarly, he departed the Grill in 2014 to start White Street, where he served as consultant executive chef for the first year.

Furthermore, Cardoz came home in 2015 to open his first restaurant in Mumbai, The Bombay Canteen, which quickly gained local and worldwide recognition. Cardoz returned to New York in the summer of 2016 and founded Paowalla in the Soho district, focusing on small plates to reinvent approachable Indian cuisine. Similarly, in 2018, he closed Paowalla and reopened it as Bombay Bread Bar, with a more informal, festive environment.

He was also a four-time James Beard Award nominee and author of two cookbooks. In the summer of 2012, Cardoz won season three of Bravo’s “Top Chef Masters.” He donated his earnings to the ‘Young Scientist Cancer Research Fund’ at The ‘Icahn School of Medicine at Mount Sinai’.

He has also received the James Beard Award for “Humanitarian of the Year” in recognition of his ongoing commitment to community engagement. GQ Magazine named Cardoz one of the “Top 50 Most Influential Global Indians” in 2011.
