Liz Truss has chosen Therese Coffey to fill the position of health secretary.

In the period leading up to what is anticipated to be a contentious campaign for the General Election in 2024, Ms. Truss places a high priority on enhancing the NHS.

Sajid Javid, the interim replacement for Steve Barclay, a fervent Boris supporter, resigned in protest of Mr. Johnson’s premiership in July, and she took over.

Ms. Coffey, 50, will become the third Health Secretary in as many months. Steve Barclay was a staunch supporter of Boris, and Sajid Javid quit in protest against Mr. Johnson’s premiership.

She assumes this position at a time when 6.7 million people in England are in need. They also wait for routine procedures like knee replacements and cataract surgery on the NHS waiting lists.

Over the next two years, it is anticipated that the line will continue to grow as more patients seek treatment after experiencing delays due to the epidemic.

A patient who has had a heart attack or stroke must wait an average of one hour for an ambulance, which is more than three times longer than the goal of 18 minutes. At the same time, the situation in emergency rooms is so bad.

Additionally, 30,000 people wait on A&E trolleys for more than 12 hours each month before being admitted to a ward.

Patients are still having trouble getting an appointment with their primary care physician. According to advocates and industry experts, it is forcing the sickest people to seek treatment at emergency rooms and further clogging up the system.

Bed-blocking, which occurs when elderly patients cannot be transferred into care homes due to a lack of beds in those facilities, has reached record levels. This compounds the problem.

Ms. Truss is regarded as a politician who can see the big picture; colleagues have referred to her and Ms. Coffey as “yin and yang”. Ms. Coffey is regarded as a forensic operator who is familiar with and knowledgeable about her assignment.

Nevertheless, despite her dedication to her job, the incoming secretary of health holds onto a number of beliefs that, if made known to the public, would agitate senior NHS officials. A practicing Catholic, Ms. Coffey said that while she would prefer that people refrain from having abortions, she would not condemn those who do.
