In 2013, Ashanti started sparking rumors about a split. “Nelly and I are in a place where I’m kinda focusing on my career,” she spilled on Hot 97. Meanwhile, he was concentrating on his own stuff.
The year was a whirlwind. More things went public than ever before.
“I gotta do me,” Ashanti, who dropped her album Braveheart in 2014, went on. “We’re in that space right now.” She admitted that things were said and done that probably shouldn’t have been. But hey, what’s done is done.
In 2015, she confirmed the split. “I think when people have their own insecurities, it lets them act outta character,” she shared on The Meredith Vieira Show. She confessed to feeling betrayed. But, you know, you just gotta grow up. Accept responsibility for your actions and all that jazz.
“I’m not a big fan of folks being cowards,” she added. “So I think it’s super important to know yourself and understand what you want. And go get it. I’m in a different place right now.”
