Bortles excelled in baseball and football for the Lions when a student at Oviedo High School in Oviedo, Florida. He had always been interested in athletic sports, and with his family’s help, he could start refining his skills at a young age. As a junior, he played college football for UCF, where he was named the 2014 Fiesta Bowl MVP and the AAC Offensive Player of the Year.

Bortles decided to forego his senior year and declare for the 2014 NFL Draft on January 5, 2014. He made a wise choice, as the Jaguars picked Blake Bortles third overall in the 2014 NFL Draft.

Bortles signed a four-year, $20.6 million guaranteed rookie deal with the club on June 18, 2014. In Week 3, Bortles made his NFL debut against Indianapolis Colts. He showed fantastic talent in the early phase of his league. By sprinting for 20 or more yards seven times in 2014, second only to Russell Wilson of the Seattle Seahawks, Bortles established himself as a dual-threat quarterback in his first campaign. He also had a 3-10 record as a starter and set team records with 55 sacks for 345 yards lost, which led the NFL.

After a promising preseason in his second season, Bortles started the 2015 season slowly, throwing one touchdown and two picks. With 4,428 throwing yards this season, he finished seventh in the NFL after Manning, Brady, Palmer, Matt Ryan, and Drew Brees. On the NFL Top 100 Players of 2016, his teammates placed him 56th. His final season with the team was ordinary; he claimed to have had a Grade 1 right AC joint sprain in Week 8 and wrist tendinitis later in the campaign.

He had many contracts with the Jaguars until 2019, when he left the team to join the Los Angeles Rams and start a new NFL career. He spent one season with the team before moving on to the Denver Broncos, where he signed a one-year deal. Before calling it quits in the NFL on October 5, 2022, he played for the Green Bay Packers and the New Orleans Saints.
