Is Drake’s Betting Curse Finally Lifted?
Drake visits South Africa, 27 Jun 2016

Canadian rapper Drake has been seen as a bad omen for athletes in recent years. So much so, that people started calling his backing a “curse”. But things are changing. In a surprising turn of events this April, Drake won a significant bet on UFC 287, where he backed Israel Adesanya to win. The win has us questioning whether Drake’s long-standing curse has finally been broken.

What is the Drake betting curse?

For years, the Drake betting curse has been the subject of speculation and amusement in the sports world. The curse suggests that whenever Drake publicly supports or bets on a team or athlete, misfortune follows shortly after. It has become a lighthearted superstition that fans and bettors jokingly attribute to the Canadian rapper.

Cursed – what happened?

The curse gained traction as a result of several notable incidents over the years. Drake’s support for the Toronto Raptors, his hometown basketball team, seemingly caused them to decline. Despite his fervent backing, the Raptors experienced repeated playoff disappointments. The curse also affected other teams, including soccer clubs Manchester City and PSG. But it extended beyond team sports, affecting individual athletes too. Conor McGregor, the renowned MMA fighter, suffered defeat in a fight against Khabib Nurmagomedov after Drake met him.

A glimmer of hope

Drake’s recent win on UFC 287 has sparked speculation that perhaps the curse has finally ended. Adesanya, whom Drake backed to win, reclaimed the middleweight title in a fight against Alex Pereira. Drake’s faith in Adesanya paid off, as he won around $2.7 million from his bets on the fight.

The significance of this victory

The fact that Drake’s bet on Adesanya won makes us wonder whether the rapper has finally broken free from the infamous curse. This win makes us hope that Drake’s involvement in sports and betting may no longer be synonymous with losses and declines.

But don’t let it become a fallacy. The fact that Drake-supported teams and athletes lost is nothing but a coincidence. Teams and athletes lose whether they have Drake’s support or not. It’s a lot like a game of blackjack at your favorite online casino South Africa. It doesn’t really matter whether you have your lucky charm with you, or how long of a losing streak you had: chance will do its thing.

The Canadian rapper being a bad omen is a fun thought experiment nonetheless.

With his recent win on UFC 287, it appears that Drake may have defied the odds and escaped the clutches of his infamous betting curse. But only time will tell if Drake’s winning streak continues or if the curse resurfaces in future events.
