Truss was born in the north of England at the age of 46. This has long been a stronghold of the opposition Labour Party.
Previously, the Oxford native identified as a Social Democrat, an affiliation closely aligned with centrist ideals.
According to the BBC, Elizabeth Truss attended Oxford University and majored in philosophy, politics, and economics. Truss developed a stronger affinity for Conservative ideals after her time there, which advocate for the government to play a smaller role in the economy and the private sector to play a larger role.
Truss is the Secretary of State for Work and Pensions at the moment. For over ten years, she worked in the private sector in a variety of capacities, including as a commercial manager in the energy and telecommunications industries.
During the 2000s, Truss ran unsuccessfully for several offices. Nonetheless, she was eventually elected to the House of Commons in 2010. In 2012, Truss was appointed the Parliamentary Under Secretary of State for Education and Childcare. She was also in charge of roles related to the environment, food, and rural affairs.
Throughout her campaign, Truss has emphasized the knowledge she gained while serving in these positions. Since September 2021, she has served as Secretary of Foreign Affairs or Foreign Minister, the highest-ranking and most prestigious position she has ever held.
Truss has served as the United Kingdom’s Secretary of State for Foreign and Commonwealth Affairs throughout the current conflict in Ukraine. She frequently threatened Russia with sanctions and harshly criticized Russian President Vladimir Putin.
Furthermore, despite voting against leaving the EU in the 2016 referendum, she has been in charge of negotiating Brexit with the EU. She later admitted her error and now appreciates the “opportunities” that have arisen as a direct result of her error.
Truss has a happy marriage and two children outside of her political career.
