After falling out of favour at Chelsea under Jose Mourinho, on 24 January 2014, he was sold to Manchester United for a fee of £37.1 million. He made his debut for the club on 28 January 2014.

On the international level, he has represented Spain at various age levels. He has represented Spain at U16, U17, U19, U20, U21, U23, and the senior level.
