A loving family! Kelly Ripa and Mark Consuelos‘ children — Michael Consuelos, Lola Consuelos and Joaquin Consuelos — are their world. Though the Hollywood couple agrees they don’t have a favorite child, Kelly once dished she has a uniquely special bond with her youngest kiddo.
“I hope my other kids are not watching this, but they’re not [easy to handle.] Here’s what: [the] third kid is the best kid,” the TV personality joked about Joaquin on her talk show Live With Kelly and Ryan. “They sleep, they do their homework, they pick their crap up off the floor … they just know they’ve got to give you a break.”
Lola and Michael love getting on their mom’s nerves, but most of the time, Kelly doesn’t mind joining in on the fun. She also knows how to be serious with her children, and when Lola left for college, there was nothing comical about how much Kelly was going to miss her girl.
The TV star opened up about the bittersweet milestone when she helped Lola get settled into her dorm room at New York University. “There weren’t real tears, but there were lots of, ‘Don’t think I’m gonna be home before Thanksgiving because I’m not. I’m not gonna be home before Thanksgiving. You won’t see me before Thanksgiving,’” Kelly said on Live in September 2019, jokingly mimicking her daughter.
As for the couple’s eldest child, Michael is living out his dream in New York, but that doesn’t mean he doesn’t need his parents every now and then. Not only has he guest starred on his dad’s CW series Riverdale on several occasions, but he also joins his mom on Live from time to time.
When it comes to their youngest, Kelly and Mark — who wed in 1996 — were taking advantage of the time they had left before they officially became empty-nesters. After Joaquin left to attend college at the University of Michigan in 2021, the famous duo no longer has any kiddos running around their house.
While opening up about the new phase of their life, Kelly said it was “brutally painful” saying goodbye to her youngest son. “We became empty-nesters. We took [Joaquin] to college, we dropped him off. It was hard. It was really hard,” she said during a Live broadcast in September 2021.
“It’s one of those things where you can never be ready,” the mom of three continued. “We’ve done it before but the other two, [Michael and Lola] stayed in New York, so we knew they were there … even though their visits weren’t as frequent as we thought.”
