Lyle Waggoner is a late veteran actor, sculptor, presenter, travel trailer salesman, and model from the United States. Lyle Waggoner is known for playing various character roles in the variety/sketch comedy television show “The Carol Burnett Show” from 1967 to 1974.

Early Life

Lyle Waggoner was born in Kansas City, Kansas, the United States, on April 13, 1935. His full name is Lyle Wesley Waggoner and he holds US nationality. At the age of 84 years old, he passed away. He has had a birth sign of Aries and practices Christianity religion. Meanwhile, he belongs to German ethnicity.

His father was Myron Waggon and his mother was Marie Waggoner. Lyle was the only child of his parents. When he was just five years old, his family moved to Excelsior Springs, Missouri, and spent most of his childhood life.

The veteran actor died in his home in the Los Angeles area at the age of 84 on March 17, 2020, from cancer.

Education and joined the Military

In 1953, he completed his high school graduation from Kirkwood High School in Kirkwood, Missouri. During his high school days, he was a state high school wrestling champion and was also a high jumper. Later, he enrolled at Washington University in St. Louis and studied for one semester there.

After this, he joined the United States Army, following which he served two years as a radio operator in the Signal Corps in Germany. When his military service was over, he studied mechanical engineering in the junior executive program at General Motors Institute. As a result, he became a door-to-door encyclopedia salesman.

Acting Career

Lyle Waggoner made his acting debut as a muscle man in a Kansas City production of “Li’l Abner,” after which he created a sales promotion organization that enabled him to make enough money to finance a trip to Los Angeles to pursue his acting career.

He started appearing regularly in television and films by the mid-1960s, including an episode of “Gunsmoke” (“The Wishbone” in 1966). Moreover, he was chosen as a finalist for the title role in the TV series version of “Batman,” but lost the role to actor Adam West.

He then landed another role as Angelo in the 1967 comedy musical mystery film “Catalina Caper.” Following this, he made a minor guest-starring role in the season-three episode ‘Deadliest of the Species’ of the TV series “Lost in Space.”

Rose to Fame

However, he rose to fame after, he started a seven-year stint on “The Carol Burnett Show,” a comedy sketch and variety show, on which he appeared as an announcer and performer. The show ran from 1967 to 1974, where Lyle appeared in a total of 182 episodes. He also posed semi-nude for a  Playgirl centrefold in 1973.

The actor was appointed “mayor” of Encino, California, by the local chamber of commerce in 1976. Meanwhile, the mayor is not a genuine government official; the post is a privileged “goodwill ambassador” position

He played the role of  Major Steve Trevor in the pilot and first season of the television series “Wonder Woman.” Moreover, he then played Colonel Steve Trevor Jr. in the series season.

During the 1970s to 1980s

During the 1970s to 1980s, he appeared in several TV movies and minor motion pictures, often cast for “hunk” appeal. He appeared as a guest star on several television shows, including “Charlie’s Angels,” “The San Pedro Beach Bums,” “Happy Days,” “Mork & Mindy,” “The Golden Girls,” “Ellen,” and “The War at Home.” He also appeared in at least three episodes of |The Love Boat,” “Fantasy Island,” and “Murder, She Wrote.”

The actor founded Star Waggons, a company that leased customized location trailers for use by the entertainment industry. In the year 1990, he co-produced and appeared in a consumer-product show called Consumer America with co-host Shawn Bruner.

Retired from Acting

During the early 1990s, he retired from full-time acting to run Star Waggons but made occasional appearances, often parodying his earlier image. He was the infomercial ‘Let’s Talk With Lyle Waggoner’ in 1993, for a supposedly natural product called Y-Bron which claimed to cure male impotence, but the company behind the product was later fined $1.5 million for unsubstantiated claims.

Besides acting, he made a name for himself as a sculptor and his work can be seen at Galleries West Fine Art in Jackson Hole, Wyoming. His sculptures, which are frequently hilarious depictions of beautiful ladies, are cast at Eagle Bronze in Lander, Wyoming.

Relationship Status

On September 17, 1961, Lyle Waggoner married Sharon Kennedy. In addition, his wife is a financial consultant, actress, and realtor. With the marriage, the couple have two sons named Beau and Jason. Till the time of Lyle’s death, the family resided near Jackson, Wyoming.
