Early Life and Education

Mark Curry was born on June 1, 1961 in Oakland, California as the youngest of nine children. As a teenager, he attended St. Joseph Notre Dame High School in Alameda. For his higher education, he went to California State University, East Bay in Hayward.

Television Career

Curry first appeared on television in the late 80s doing stand-up on the variety show “It’s Showtime at the Apollo.” He did further stand-up sets in the early 90s on “An Evening at the Improv” and “One Night Stand.” From 1992 to 1994, Curry served as host of “It’s Showtime at the Apollo.” Also in 1992, he began playing his most famous role, NBA player-turned-gym teacher Mark Cooper on the ABC sitcom “Hangin’ with Mr. Cooper.” The series costarred Holly Robinson Peete, Dawnn Lewis, Nell Carter, and Omar Gooding, among others. “Hangin’ with Mr. Cooper” ultimately ran for five seasons, concluding in the summer of 1997. During the show’s run, Curry made guest appearances on series such as “Living Single” and “Martin.” At the end of the decade, he performed a stand-up special on “Comedy Central Presents.”

Kicking off the 2000s, Curry played the recurring role of Robert Soulard, the boss of Drew Carey, in the fifth season of “The Drew Carey Show.” He also appeared on “For Your Love,” starred in the Disney Channel Original Movie “The Poof Point,” and hosted the Comedy Central game show “Don’t Forget Your Toothbrush.” Curry continued to make regular appearances on game shows and variety shows over the subsequent years. From 2002 to 2003, he was a recurring guest on “Pyramid,” and from 2003 to 2004 hosted the variety show “Animal Tails.” In 2004, Curry appeared frequently on “Hollywood Squares”; he also competed in the fourth season of the reality game show “The Mole.” Returning to regular scripted series, Curry appeared in episodes of “Less Than Perfect,” “Fat Actress,” and “Tyler Perry’s House of Payne.”

In 2011, Curry appeared in an episode of the reality series “Celebrity Ghost Stories” and an episode of the ABC Family teen drama “The Secret Life of the American Teenager.” He appeared on the latter show again in 2012, the same year he began playing the main role of Marcus Barnes on the Nick at Nite sitcom “See Dad Run.” Curry starred alongside Scott Baio, Alanna Ubach, Ryan Newman, and Jackson Brundage, among others. “See Dad Run” aired for three seasons through 2014. Curry subsequently returned to stand-up with a set on “Gotham Comedy Live.” He also played the main role of Pastor William Winters on the short-lived sitcom “One Love,” costarring Sheryl Lee Ralph.

In 2015, Curry guest-starred on the sitcoms “Instant Mom” and “Black Jesus.” He had a bigger role from 2019 to 2021, when he played Principal Glass, the principal of Maya Angelou Magnet School, on the Netflix sitcom “Family Reunion.” The show’s stars included Tia Mowry, Anthony Alabi, Talia Jackson, Cameron J. Wright, and Loretta Devine. While he was still on “Family Reunion,” Curry played the recurring role of Wade in the seventh season of the sitcom “In the Cut,” starring Dorien Wilson and Ken Lawson.

Film Career

Although primarily known for his work on television, Curry has appeared in some theatrical films. His first was the 1991 comedy “Talkin’ Dirty After Dark,” in which he starred alongside Martin Lawrence and Lance Crouther. Curry subsequently had bit parts in “Panther,” “The Fanatics,” “Switchback,” and “Armageddon.” He had a bigger part in the 2000 comedy “A Man is Mostly Water.”

Burn Injuries

In 2007, Curry was burned on over 20% of his body when an aerosol can in his home fell behind his water heater and exploded. He was put into a three-day medically-induced coma, after which he contemplated suicide. Curry ultimately made a full recovery.

Personal Life

Curry is married, but the identity of his wife remains unknown to the public. The couple has two children named Gigi and Camilia.
