Mbwana Ally Samatta is a Tanzanian professional football player who plays for Belgian First Division A team Antwerp, on loan from Fenerbahce, and the Tanzania national team as a striker. He has previously played for Simba SC, TP Mazembe, Genk, and Aston Villa. Currently, he is playing for Royal Antwerp on a season-long loan from Fenerbahce. 

On the international level, he has represented Tanzania at various age levels. He has represented Tanzania at the senior level. He made his international debut for Tanzania on 9 February 2011. He has represented Tanzania at the 2019 Africa Cup of Nations. Since his debut, he made over 55 caps and scored over 15 goals for Tanzania.

  • He started playing football for the youth team of African Lyon in 2008 and played until 2010.
  • In 2010, he joined Simba SC and began his professional career with the club. He played only half of the season with the club where he made 25 appearances for the club, scoring 13 goals in all the competitions. 
  • In 2011, he joined TP Mazembe, spending a total of five years with them, initially becoming a first-team regular. He was named the 2015 African-based Player of the Year and finished the season as the top goalscorer of the CAF Champions League, as he helped TP Mazembe to win the title. 
  • With TP Mazembe, he made 103 appearances for the club, scoring 60 goals in all the competitions. At TP Mazembe, he won four Linafoot, two DR Congo Super Cups, and one CAF Champions League title. 
  • On 29 January 2016, he signed a four-and-a-half-year contract with KRC Genk. He helped them to qualify for the UEFA Europa League and win the Belgian Jupiler League in 2019. Having finished the season as the top goalscorer of the Jupiler League, he also won the Ebony Shoe award in Belgium for his outstanding season with Genk. With KRC Genk, he made 191 appearances for the club, scoring 76 goals and providing 20 goals in all the competitions.
  • On 20 January 2020, he signed a four-and-a-half-year contract with Premier League club Aston Villa for the transfer fee paid to Genk was reported as £8.5 million. In doing so, he became the first Tanzanian to sign for a Premier League club and is the 117th different nationality to play in the competition. He made his debut for the club on 28 January 2020 in a 2-1 win against Leicester City in the semi-final 2nd leg of the EFL Cup. On 1 February 2020, he scored on his league debut for the club in a 2-1 defeat to Bournemouth. This made him the first player from Tanzania to play, and subsequently, score in the Premier League. In his first season, he made 16 appearances for the club, scoring 2 goals in all the competitions.

  • On 25 September 2020, he joined Super Lig club Fenerbahce S.K. on an initial loan deal until the end of the season. As part of the deal, he signed a four-year contract at the end of his loan spell in July 2021. During his 2020-21 season, he made 30 appearances for the club, scoring 6 goals in all the competitions.
  • On 1 September 2021, he joined Belgian side Royal Antwerp on a season-long loan. He made his debut for the club on 11 September 2021 in a 1-0 win against KAS Eupen. On 16 September 2021, he scored his first goal for the club in a 2-1 loss against Olympiacos in the Europa League group stage match.
