Father Nipsey Hussle

Nipsey Hussle, born Ermias Joseph Asghedom on 15 August 1985, in Los Angeles, California, was a highly regarded rapper, entrepreneur, and community activist. His life was tragically cut short on 31 March 2019, when he was fatally shot outside his store, Marathon Clothing, in the Hyde Park neighborhood of Los Angeles. Nipsey left an indelible mark on the hip-hop community and beyond, celebrated not only for his musical talent, but also for his dedication to uplifting his community.

Nipsey’s journey into the world of hip-hop began at a young age. Raised in the Crenshaw neighborhood of South Los Angeles, he experienced the challenges and hardships of inner-city life, however, instead of succumbing to the negative influences around him, Nipsey chose to channel his energy into music. His stage name, Nipsey Hussle, was a combination of Nipsey Russell, a comedian he admired, and “Hustle” to represent his entrepreneurial spirit.

Nipsey gained early recognition with his mixtapes, most notably “Slauson Boy Volume 1”, released in 2005 as part of his “Bullets Ain’t Got No Name” series. His unique style and lyrical prowess caught the attention of both fans and industry insiders, and after building a small regional following on the West Coast, Nipsey was signed to Epic Records and Cinematic Music Group.

Nipsey’s prominence continued to rise in 2009, when he joined forces with Drake for the song “Killer.” During the same period, he was heard on the track “Upside Down”, featured on Snoop Dogg’s 2009 album “Malice in Wonderland,” alongside Snoop Dogg and Problem. Around that time, he also released the third installment of “Bullets Ain’t Got No Name”, and unveiled his inaugural commercial single, “Hussle in the House.” Despite positive reviews from critics, the track, which ingeniously samples Kris Kross’ 1992 single “Jump,” didn’t register on the charts.

Nipsey’s debut studio album, “South Central State of Mind,” was slated for release in 2010, supported by the single “Feelin Myself.” However, after the release of a music video for the single, the projects were postponed and never materialized. Despite these setbacks, his independent approach to releasing music, including selling mixtapes for $100 each, garnered attention. He believed in the power of ownership and self-sufficiency, a philosophy that would become central to his career.

In 2010, as Epic Records faced financial challenges, Nipsey decided not to renew his contract, and instead founded his own record label called “All Money In Records.” It was his 2010 mixtape, “The Marathon,” that marked a turning point in his career. The project showcased his growth as an artist and his commitment to the marathon of life, a metaphor he often used to describe the journey toward success. The Marathon showcased guest appearances by Kokane and MGMT. Subsequently, on 1 November 2011, Hussle followed up with a sequel entitled The Marathon Continues, enlisting the talents of Los Angeles rappers Dom Kennedy and YG.

In 2018, Nipsey Hussle released his long-awaited debut studio album, “Victory Lap,” which received critical acclaim and earned him a Grammy nomination for Best Rap Album. The album featured collaborations with prominent artists such as Kendrick Lamar, YG, and Puff Daddy. Several songs from the album reached the Builboard Hot 100, including “Dedication,” Double Up,” and “Last Time I Checc’d.” More than a year after its initial release, the album achieved a renewed peak, securing the number 2 spot on the Billboard 200 in April 2019, following Hussle’s death.

Beyond music, Nipsey Hussle was a visionary entrepreneur. He was dedicated to reinvesting in his community, and fostering economic empowerment. In 2017, he opened the Marathon Clothing store in the Crenshaw district, providing a platform for streetwear and promoting economic growth in the area. Nipsey’s commitment to uplifting his community extended to real estate investments, job creation, and educational opportunities.

Nipsey also tried his luck in acting – in 2007, Hussle took on a minor role in a semi-autobiographical film of Bone Thugs-n-Harmony entitled “I Tried”, directed by Rich Newey. He expanded his acting portfolio in 2010, when he was featured in the film “Caged Animal” alongside Gillie Da Kid, Ving Rhames, and Robert Patrick. Making a cameo appearance in 2015, Hussle was seen in “The Sexy Getting Ready Song” during the pilot episode of “Crazy Ex-Girlfriend”, when he delivered a brief rap.

Nipsey’s personal life also garnered attention, particularly his relationship with actress and model Lauren London. The couple had a son named Kross in 2016. Lauren played a significant role in Nipsey’s life, not only as his partner but also as a supportive figure in his creative and entrepreneurial endeavors.

While Nipsey’s relationship with Lauren London was widely known, it’s important to note that his relationship with Tanisha Foster, the mother of his daughter Emani, was separate. The details of their relationship and co-parenting dynamics are not well known, compared to his relationship with Lauren.

Nipsey Hussle’s impact reached far beyond the music industry. His tragic death at the age of 33 sent shockwaves through the hip-hop community, and sparked an outpouring of grief from fans, fellow artists, and public figures. His legacy continues to inspire, and the Marathon Clothing store has become a symbol of his dedication to creating positive change in his community.

Nipsey’s death

Nipsey Hussle was shot multiple times in the parking lot of his store, Marathon Clothing, in South Central Los Angeles around 3:18 p.m.; the attacker also kicked him in the head. Two others were injured in the shooting.

All three victims were taken to the hospital, where Nipsey Hussle was declared dead at 3:55 p.m. The police identified the suspect as Eric Ronald Holder Jr., who was 29 years old at the time. Investigators believed that Holder and the rapper knew each other, and the shooting might have been due to a personal issue.

On 2 April 2019, the Los Angeles Police Department arrested Holder, and he was held in solitary confinement until convicted on 6 July, of first-degree murder, and two charges of attempted voluntary manslaughter for causing harm to bystanders. On 22 February 2023, Superior Court Judge H. Clay Jack handed down a 60-year prison sentence to Holder.

Nipsey’s net worth before death

At the moment of his passing in 2019, Nipsey’s overall net worth was estimated at $8 million, primarily as a result of his successful musical career and his entrepreneurial endeavors.
