What is “Life Below Zero”
“Life Below Zero” is yet another show that follows Alaskan hunters and their families through their daily activities; created by BBC Worldwide, the show airs on the National Geographic Channel, and after premiering on the 19th May 2013, its eleventh season started airing on the 18th September. So far, the show has won two Primetime Emmy Awards, first in 2016 for Outstanding Cinematography for a Reality Program, and the second in 2017 for Outstanding Picture Editing for an Unstructured Reality Program. Sue Aikens was born on the 1st July 1963 in Mount Prospect, and before Alaska, she lived in Chicago and Palatine. Her parents divorced and she and her mother moved to Fairbanks, Alaska, where she went to Lowell Whiteman School, but soon surviving in Alaska became her main concern, and she started learning about Alaskan winters, and nature. Once old enough, she set up a hunting camp, Kavik River Kamp, found 200 miles north of the Arctic Circle. Since its inception, her camp has hosted numerous hunters, who use the camp to refresh and prepare for new adventures. Thanks to the success of her camp, she was approached by the producers of the “Life Below Zero”, and Sue became the main cast member of the show, and has so far featured in 111 episodes of the highly-acclaimed TV series, which has increased her wealth to a large degree. Glenn Villeneuve
Next in line is Glenn Villeneuve; he was born on the 18th March 1969, in Burlington, Vermont USA, and from an early age he was inspired by nature, and would spend hours outside exploring the most remote corners of the area he lived in. He hasn’t revealed much of his childhood, though it is known that he quit high school after only a year as love for exploring nature won out. He finally moved to Alaska in 1999, and settled in Chandalar, 200 miles north of Fairbanks and 65 miles north of the Arctic Circle. His way of life attracted the producers of “Life Below Zero”, and he became a cast member of the show. So far, Glenn has appeared in more than 75 episodes and has become one of the most successful members of the show. When it comes to his personal life, Glenn was married to Silvia Daeumichen from 2001 until 2013, with whom he has two children. He settled in the small town of Noorvik, where he soon met his future wife, Agnes, an Alaskan native with Inupiat ancestry. His way of life attracted the producers of “Life Below Zero”, and together with his family, became cast members of the show. Andy Bassich
Andy Bassich was born in 1958, in Washington, D.C. USA, and came to Alaska in 1980. He spent his childhood in Wheaton, Maryland USA, alongside his sister. Andy went to John F. Kennedy High School, from which he matriculated in 1976, after which he started a carpentry business in the state of Virginia, before moving to Alaska, and settling alongside the Yukon River. He took a job as a riverboat captain, and during one of his expeditions to Dawson City, he met his future wife, Kate. In addition to his service as a riverboat captain, Andy is also a hunter, and has over 20 sled dogs. He attracted the producers of “Life Below Zero” thanks to his unusual way of life, and became a part of the show. Jessie Holmes
Jessie Holmes is the next in line; he was born in 1980 in Alabama USA, but moved to Alaska when he was only 16 years old, and settled in the town of Nenana, where he started building boats, cabins, fish wheels, and sleds. He began breeding sled dogs too, and currently has over 35. He has survived by hunting for salmon, wolverine, lynx, and muskrat, among other Alaskan animals. He didn’t join the show until 2015 but since then has become a main cast member, and has appeared in almost 50 episodes, which has increased his popularity and wealth. Accidents, Deaths, and Other Controversy
Life in Alaska might be simple but isn’t easy, and many of these cast members have been embroiled in a number of dangerous situations. Luckily, no one from the show has died, but Sue and Glenn have faced danger. Sue was “strong-armed” into a variety of hazardous scenarios by Aaron Mellman, the producer of the show, and without face protections out in extreme cold, suffered frostbite, and furthermore survived a bear attack. Glenn on the other hand, was surrounded by a pack of wolves, but escaped and returned safely to his cabin.
Chip Hailstone spent several months in jail, after making false allegations that a man from the town of Noorvik held his daughter at gunpoint, which eventually turned out to be untrue. As a result, Chip spent 15 months in the Anchorage Correctional Complex.
