Bachelor Nation is discovering more about the separation of Nayte Olukoya and Michelle Young.
Nayte addressed out about the separation on the Sept. 8 edition of The Viall Files, claiming he broke up with Michelle over the phone, roughly three months after the former Bachelorette pair revealed they’d called off their engagement.
“Our relationship was tough,” Nayte said to presenter and fellow Bachelor Nation contestant Nick Viall. “There was lots of ups and downs, lots of arguments, lots of fights and just not really clicking, not really seeing eye-to-eye.”
Nayte and Michelle, who got engaged on season 18 of The Bachelorette last year, visited Los Angeles in June to celebrate her birthday with her friends and attend Wango Tango. But, as Nayte explained to Nick, “things were just kind of rocky” and they had an altercation before doing press at the music festival.
In fact, he stated that the weekend was not going well in general, adding that he and Michelle were up late “having very deep conversations” and that he discussed the pair’s compatibility with her friends. Nayte also stated that he and Michelle had discussed splitting up before, revealing that their first breakup conversation was in January.
“So the last day in L.A., a conversation was already heading towards a breakup, which again it wasn’t our first time of us having breakup conversations,” he explained. “This is probably our third time having a breakup conversation.”
Nayte, who lived in Austin at the time, claimed he then went to the airport, where he sobbed and phoned his mother and sister. The sales professional phoned his friends and family, including his mother, after an emotional journey home. He recalled thinking, “I don’t see the relationship working anymore.”
Nayte received a call from Michelle, who resides in Minnesota, while he was chatting to his mother. Nayte claimed he assumed she was home, but she was still at the airport, which “just kind of makes the story even worse.” He claims she then brought up their inability to attend CMA Fest the following week.
“She’s like, ‘Hey, if we’re not doing CMAs next week we have to give them a reason why,’” Nayte explained. “And I just blurted out, ‘We’re not doing CMAs because I can’t be with you anymore,’” she explains.
“So yeah, I broke up with her over the phone, which is a dick move.” he continued.
Later that month, Nayte and Michelle announced their split on Instagram. Former Bachelorette and Off the Vine With Kaitlyn Bristowe presenter Kaitlyn Bristowe revealed in a July episode that Michelle was “blindsided” by the divorce.
So, how does Nayte feel about the claim that he abruptly ended his relationship with Michelle? “I can’t tell somebody how to feel,” said the former competitor, who has refuted infidelity allegations. “So if Michelle felt caught off guard, I can’t take that away from her.” But I know the truth is that this wasn’t our first time discussing a breakup.”
Michelle hasn’t spoken much about the breakup, save than a joint divorce statement with Nayte. On a July episode of The Ben and Ashley I. Almost Famous podcast, she said that it was not something she had expected.
“Where I’m struggling with this piece is it’s like you never know how much to say, you never know how to handle it, you never know how it’s going to be taken,” the former instructor explained. “But I will say that this is not something that I foresaw, and I’ll leave it there.”
