Prince Harry and Meghan Markle were attending the 2023 Women of Vision Awards in New York City on May 16, where Markle was set to receive one of the night’s honors. Also in attendance was Markle’s mother, Doria Ragland, making it a happy family affair. However, the night turned into a nightmare when the family was relentlessly chased by paparazzi after the event, lasting over two hours. The paparazzi’s driving was highly aggressive, resulting in near-collisions involving other drivers, pedestrians, and even two NYPD officers. The Duke and Duchess of Sussex, and Ragland, were understandably shaken but thankfully unharmed.

In a statement to POPSUGAR, a spokesperson for the Sussexes expressed that while being in the public eye comes with a level of interest from the public, it should never come at the cost of anyone’s safety. Dissemination of the images, given the ways in which they were obtained, encourages a highly intrusive practice that is dangerous to all involved. The photos of the couple that came as a result from the two-hour chase briefly appeared on the Daily Mail but have since been removed.

The incident drew parallels to the 1997 car accident that killed Prince Harry’s mother, the late Princess Diana, who was attempting to evade paparazzi pursuit in Paris. Prince Harry is passionate about stopping the invasive, unlawful, and dangerous tactics some news media resort to in order to obtain their scoops. He is currently suing the UK’s Associated Newspapers in this pursuit of change.

During a May 17 press conference, New York City’s mayor, Eric Adams, slammed the behavior of the paparazzi involved. Adams emphasized that public safety must always be at the forefront, especially in a densely populated city like New York. He said that it would be horrific to lose innocent bystanders during a chase like this, and something to have happened to the royal family as well, so we have to be extremely responsible.

The incident serves as a reminder of the need to respect people’s privacy and safety, regardless of their public profile. It also highlights the importance of responsible journalism and ethical reporting practices.
