It was reportedly created to connect a personal workstation to a laser printer, for which a single wire called the “ether” was used, this is from where the technology was named the Ethernet by Metcalfe.

His innovation was awarded the IEEE Medal of Honor, and the National Medal of Technology and Innovation. Currently, he is a Professor of Innovation and Entrepreneurship at The University Of Texas at Austin since 2011.
