Sidney Crosby is a Canadian NHL hockey player who has been a centerman on the Pittsburgh Penguins for his entire career. Crosby is one of the most popular hockey players of all time, but he is incredibly private for a person of his stature, and you will not find him on any major social media platforms.

Crosby was selected first overall by the Penguins in 2005 draft and immediately emerged as one of the best players in the NHL. He scored 102 points in his rookie season playing alongside Hall of Famer and fellow Canadian Mario Lemieux, finishing second to Alexander Ovechkin for the Calder Memorial Trophy (the NHL’s rookie of the year award). Ovechkin was the first overall selection the year prior, but an NHL lockout in 2004-05 resulted in the two playing as rookies in the same season. This would be the beginning of one of the greatest player rivalries in the NHL history.

Crosby was a minor hockey legend, dominating at the midget (Under 18) and Junior A (Under 21) level as a 14-year-old. He was selected first overall by the Rimouski Océanic in the Quebec Major Junior Hockey League (QMJHL) draft and went on to represent Canada in the World Junior Hockey tournament as 16-year-old for the fifth time in team history. The young phenom set the tournament record for youngest scorer at the time and went on to lead the team to a gold medal the following season.

The nickname, “Sid the Kid,” was popularized quickly by the media and has stuck with Crosby to this day in his age 36 season. In just his third season, alongside fellow superstar Evgeni Malkin who was drafted by the Penguins second overall in 2004 behind Alexander Ovechkin, Crosby led the Penguins to their first Stanley Cup Finals since 1991-92. The duo still plays together to this day and went on to win three Stanley Cups together (2008-09, 2015-16, 2016-17).

One of his most impressive achievements is becoming a member of the Triple Gold Club winning an Olympic Gold Medal, a World Championship Gold Medal, and a Stanley Cup. Crosby scored the game winning goal in overtime on home ice at the Vancouver Olympics in 2010, nicknamed the “Golden Goal,” as one of the most iconic sports moments of all time. Team Canada went on to win Gold the following Winter Olympics in 2014 with Crosby as the Captain.

A 10-time all-star, Crosby is known as a pass first player with over 1000 career assist and has been awarded the Art Ross Trophy twice as the leagues point leader. Despite this reputation, he has been awarded the Maurice “Rocket” Richard Trophy twice as the league leading goal scorer. The three-time Stanley Cup champion also has two Hart Memorial Trophy’s as the league MVP, and two Conn Smythe trophies as playoff MVP.

Pittsburgh as now failed to make the playoffs in consecutive seasons after qualifying in 16 consecutive seasons after Crosby’s rookie seasons. He will be back with the Penguins again for at least one more season at age 37, but in the meantime, you can bet on the 2024 NHL playoffs by exploring Canada’s sports betting apps
