During the regular season, Sarkisian passed for 4,027 yards and 33 touchdowns. He had the best passing rating in the NCAA (173.6). He received recognition for his performances by being selected second-team All-American and WAC Offensive Player of the Year.
Sarkisian became the seventh quarterback from BYU to earn the Sammy Baugh Trophy for being the best passer in the country. In December 1996, he was again depicted on the cover of TV Guide. In the Cotton Bowl Classic, BYU defeated Kansas State 19–15 to cap the campaign.
In the fourth quarter, Sarkisian threw two touchdown passes to help the Cougars come from behind and win.
