After Kurt Angle was fired, Teddy Long was named SmackDown’s first African-American general manager in July 2004. When Long fined Angle $1,000 for not having his wrestling equipment on his first night as general manager, he lost his cool quickly.

Long used The Boogeyman to defeat Raw General Manager Eric Bischoff at Survivor Series as part of the SmackDown! vs. Raw storyline. However, Booker T and his defense of the US Championship complicated Long’s situation.

Booker T frequently avoided title defenses by pretending to be injured and having other wrestlers fight on his behalf. Long had had enough of these shenanigans, and Booker was given an ultimatum at No Way, Out: face Chris Benoit or lose the championship.

On the April 7, 2009 episode of ECW, he announced that he will return to SmackDown as general manager, with Tiffany taking his place. He did so in order to become the organization’s first general manager to serve a second term.
