The Royal Family announced on September 8 that Queen Elizabeth II had died at the age of 96.
“The Queen died peacefully at Balmoral this afternoon,” the family said in a statement on Buckingham Palace’s website. “The King and The Queen Consort will remain at Balmoral this evening and will return to London tomorrow.” The sad news comes after Buckingham Palace issued a statement earlier in the day confirming concerns about the Queen’s health. Her loved ones had come to her aid.
Elizabeth had a lot of health concerns in the previous year, including hospitalization in February 2022 for her COVID-19 diagnosis.
According to the BBC, Elizabeth was the second-longest reigning Queen in history, reigning for more than 70 years. The first was King Louis XIV of France, who reigned for 72 years and 110 days. However, in September 2015, she became the UK’s longest-ruling Queen, surpassing her great-great-grandmother Queen Victoria, who reigned for 63 years and 216 days.
When her father, Monarch George VI, died in 1952, Elizabeth was just 25 years old. She and Prince Philip, whom she had married in November 1947, were on a tour of Australia and New Zealand with a stop in Kenya when they received word that the king had died, crowning Elizabeth queen. Elizabeth was crowned in Westminster Abbey in June 1953.
Elizabeth was Queen of the Commonwealth, which now encompasses 54 nations, during her reign. With her Silver, Golden, Diamond, Sapphire, and Platinum Jubilees, she marked significant anniversaries. Her four children, Prince Charles, Princess Anne, Prince Edward, and Prince Andrew, survive her.
