Todd is a sports fan, both as a spectator and as an investor. He is the chairman of Chelsea Football Club, as well as a stockholder in Cloud9, DraftKings, the Los Angeles Dodgers, the Los Angeles Lakers, and the Los Angeles Sparks. He is a member of the boards of the Los Angeles Lakers, Flexjet, PayActiv, CAIS, Kennedy Wilson, Cain International, and PayActiv. Boehly previously served on Truebill’s board of directors.
His interest in the European sports sector arose in 2019 because he was a soccer fan and wanted to spend some of his wealth on it. That year, Boehly launched a $3 billion buyout bid for the English football club Chelsea, but the offer was rejected by Roman Abramovich, the club’s owner at the time and a Russian businessman.
He placed the club up for sale amid the Ukraine War, and in March 2022, he made an offer to purchase it from Abramovich with the help of Mark Walter, Hansjörg Wyss, and Clearlake Capital. Chelsea announced on May 6, 2022, that the offer had been accepted and would be completed by the end of the month.
The acquisition of the club was finalized on May 30. The Premier League, the European Union, and the governments of the UK and Portugal all endorsed the candidacy. On June 20, 2022, Boehly replaced Bruce Buck as Chelsea’s chairman and acting sporting director.
In addition to football, he has invested in other American sports, diversifying his investment portfolio. In early 2013, Boehly oversaw an agreement between Time Warner Cable and the Los Angeles Dodgers to establish SportsNet LA, a local network that would air Dodgers-related content and all Dodgers games.
Boehly also has a 20% ownership stake in both the Los Angeles Sparks and the Los Angeles Dodgers. He owns a stake in the esports league Cloud9 as well as the fantasy sports company DraftKings.
