  • Tom, at the age of seven, followed his dad’s footsteps and trained in martial arts.
  • Likewise, he also trained in wrestling and boxing. He then transitioned to Brazilian jiu-jitsu and has won the British Open in Brazilian jiu-jitsu in all belt classes except the black belt.
  • Later, he became interested in MMA. After a successful amateur career, he racked up a 5–2 professional record before running into problems with finding fights. 
  • He next turned to professional boxing and after 2.5-year hiatus from professional mixed martial arts, he signed a five-fight contract with Cage Warriors. 
  • He was then offered a contract by the Ultimate Fighting Championship but he did not feel ready for the organization.
  • After two fast finishes in Cage Warriors, he signed to the UFC. 
  • He was originally scheduled to make his promotional debut against Raphael Pessoa at UFC Fight Night: Woodley vs. Edwards on 21st March 2020 but Pessoa withdrew from the bout citing an injury and was replaced by Jake Collier, but also the event was canceled due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

But Spivak withdrew from the bout for undisclosed reasons and he was replaced by promotional newcomer Alan Baudot. Surprisingly, Aspinall won the fight via first-round technical knockout. 
  • On 20th February 2021, he faced Andrei Arlovski at UFC Fight Night: Blaydes vs. Lewis winning the fight via a submission in round two earning him the Performance of the Night award. 
  • After then, he was expected to face Sergei Pavlovich on September 4, 2021, at UFC Fight Night 191 but Pavlovich was removed from the card in late August due to alleged visa issues that restricted his ability to travel and was replaced by Sergey Spivak.
  • He won the fight via technical knockout in round one against Spivak again earning him his third Performance of the Night bonus award. 
  • On 19th March 2022, he was scheduled to face Shamil Abdurakhimov at UFC Fight Night 204. But it was then announced that Aspinall would instead face Alexander Volkov.

Tom Aspinall beats Alexander Volkov in the first round

On 19th March 2022 (Saturday night), Aspinall turned in the best performance of his UFC career, scoring a first-round submission win over Alexander Volkov in the main event of UFC London. He showed off his speed and striking accuracy immediately as he pushed the pace on Volkov and then put him on the mat less than a minute into the fight. Aspinall bloodied his opponent while they were grounded, but Volkov was able to get back to his feet just before the midway point of the frame. He didn’t get to stay there long, as Aspinall scored a second takedown with under two minutes to go. And this time, the Atherton product closed the show, forcing a tap out due to a straight armlock at 3:45 of the first round. He is now targeting a showdown with number-three-ranked heavyweight Tai Tuivasa. “I’ve been telling you all week, I’m born for this. I’m ready,” Aspinall said.”We drink beer in the UK, not just in Australia. Next time you’re in the UK, Mr. Tai Tuivasa, let’s do it, bro.” He has been tipped as a future UFC champion and showed no signs of nervousness in his first UFC main event slot.
