Costas was unexpectedly removed from covering 2018’s Super Bowl after he denounced football brutality and claimed that the “game ruins people’s brains.”

As reported by The New York Times, in November 2017, while he was speaking at the University of Maryland, Costas’ almost 40-year career with NBC Sports came to an abrupt end; which began when he was a youthful broadcaster and eventually evolved into an elder statesman.

His harsh criticism, while consistent with his previous public statements about the connection between playing football and head trauma, quickly made headlines and put NBC Sports in an awkward spotlight just months before it would air the N.F.L.’s most important and lucrative event, the Super Bowl.

To mitigate the response to his comments, Costas made an appearance on the CNN show “Smerconish” at the end of November.

He asserted that network officials were fully aware of his opinions on football and that “NBC Sports deserves credit” for assisting him in expressing his views.

Nonetheless, network officials were enraged, prompting his removal from the network’s Super Bowl plans and ultimate resignation from NBC. Costas discussed the episode with ESPN in 2018 for a report that aired on “Outside the Lines.”
