On Sunday morning at the Lee Valley VeloPark, an accident sent Englishman Matt Walls flying over the fences and into the fans.

After Walls and his bike went over the top of the barriers on the high banking of the corner, he required treatment for more than 40 minutes before being transported away by ambulance.

Because of the severity of the occurrence and the difficulties in securely retrieving Walls from where he fell, the rest of the morning session had to be cancelled. Fortunately, Walls escaped the accident with only minor injuries and was released from the hospital by that evening.

The 24-year-old Olympic omnium champion touched another rider’s wheel as he rode up the banking, sending him flying over the edge. He was attempting to avoid racers who had collapsed in a crash lower down the embankment.

Tweet by England team on Matt Walls accident

A member of the England team tweeted: “Matt Walls was rushed to the hospital for precautionary measures after he crashed during the men’s scratch race of the cycling competition. We hope for the best for the riders and fans involved and will publish an update as soon as we have more information.”

Who got injured with Matt Walls?

Two other cyclists, Matt Bostock of the Isle of Man and Derek Gee of Canada, were sent to the hospital, while two spectators received minor care at the velodrome.

When the event that led to the riders’ falls occurred at the corner’s entry, Walls was attempting to avoid it. George Jackson of New Zealand and Josh Duffy of Australia were both hurt, and they were sliding up the embankment, which caused Walls to climb up onto the barrier and go over it.

Similar to Walls, Gee surfed over the top of the barrier but avoided landing in the stands, though he did crash hard once he reached the banking again.

Three cyclists and two spectators were treated by the onsite medical team after a mishap during the morning session of track and para track cycling at the Lee Valley VeloPark, according to a statement released by a Birmingham 2022 spokeswoman.

All three bikers were sent to the hospital. Neither of the two spectators needed medical attention. We wish the cyclists and spectators well and appreciate the quick response of the medical staff. Mathias Guillemette of Canada, who was at fault for the initial collision, was disqualified from the race.
