Career highlights of Phil Petty:
Phil played for Gamecocks for three seasons from 1998-2001; during his final two years, Gamecock secured the bag by two consecutive victories over the state of Ohio. Phil was named bowl’s MVP after his two touchdowns, and 227 yards throw that led to a 31-28 victory over the Buckeyes.
Gamecock didn’t perform well during Phil’s first two seasons, with just a score of 1-21; after that, he helped the team achieve one of the biggest turnouts in college football history.
Coach Brad Scott’s last season was Phil’s first season with Gamecocks; after that, coach Lou Holtz led the team’s command. Phil ended his career at South Carolina with 5656 passing yards and 28 passing touchdowns, the seventh highest in the program’s history.
After his playing career, Phil started coaching. He worked as an assistant coach at East Carolina under Skip Holtz, whose father Lou Holtz also coached Phil at South Carolina. Currently, he is working as the head football coach at Gray Collegiate high school. His wife and two kids survive Phil.
