Kane’s departure is sure to revive rumors of a potential trade to the New York Rangers, who are thought to be the front-runners to acquire his services before the NHL trade deadline on 3 March.

Patrick Kane’s agent Pat Brisson framed Kane’s departure similarly to the Blackhawks coach Luke Richardson. Brisson told the publication on 25 February, “We decided as a group that Patrick shouldn’t play during this period of reflection because of the current state of his situation.”
As of this writing, no official reports have been related to Kane’s decision. According to ESPN, the Rangers hoped to find a third-party broker that might keep a portion of Kane’s pay to lessen the impact of his $10.5 million cap hit.
