What happened with William DaShawn Hamilton?

After more than two decades, authorities in Georgia have determined that the bones discovered in 1999 belong to a kid who was six years old at the time of his death. And now, his mother is being accused of committing a crime.

About William DaShawn Hamilton’s case

William DaShawn Hamilton was identified as the young boy whose body was discovered outside a church graveyard in Panthersville on February 26, 1999, according to the announcement made by the District Attorney of DeKalb County, Sherry Boston, on Wednesday. The case has been open for 23 years.

According to a statement released by the district attorney’s office in Boston on June 28, grand jurors handed up an indictment against Teresa Ann Bailey Black, who is 45 years old.

The following day, Black was taken into custody in Phoenix, Arizona. She is being held in custody pending her extradition to Georgia at this time.

According to Boston, Black is facing multiple charges, including two counts of felony murder, two counts of cruelty to minors, and single counts of aggravated assault and concealing the death of another person. As of Thursday, she had not yet entered a plea, and information on her attorney was not readily accessible.

In a statement, Boston said, “For far too long, this sweet little boy had neither a name nor a narrative. William has been identified thanks to the painstaking work of various individuals and groups that were determined not to let this youngster be forgotten, and justice will be served in his memory,” it was said. “Justice will be done in his memory.”

After an artist’s rendering of the boy was distributed to the public in May of 2020, the statement claims that a concerned citizen called the police to report the missing child.

The authorities claim that early this year they obtained a DNA sample from Black, which they say is consistent with the DNA that was found at the site.

In Panthersville, the bones of William were discovered in a forested area close to the Clifton United Methodist Church. These remains were described as being “seriously decomposed.” It was determined by the authorities that he was a male of African American descent between the ages of 5 and 7 and had been dead for at least three months.

William sported a shirt with a blue and white plaid pattern, a pair of red denim jeans, and a pair of brown Timberland boots. It was never established how he passed away or what brought about his demise.
