David Moyes praises star winger Jarrod Bowen for his reaction to foul chants sang in his direction during West Ham's win away at Kenilworth Road against Luton

David Moyes praised Jarrod Bowen for picking the perfect way to silence Luton’s fans after their foul chants about his girlfriend Dani Dyer during West Ham’s win which took them top of the table.

The 26-year-old winger, who has twin daughters with the former Love Island star, was subjected to songs of ‘Jarrod Bowen, your girlfriend’s a w****’ at Kenilworth Road. Bowen scored West Ham’s opening goal and celebrated by shushing the home supporters with his finger.

Moyes said after their win: ‘What do you do? You go and you score and you know that answers the questions. Players get criticism, managers do as well, and people get away with it.’

Bowen, overlooked by England manager Gareth Southgate for his latest squad, has now scored in all three of West Ham’s Premier League away games this season. Moyes added: ‘Jarrod took his goal well. He was always a threat. He’s started the season in good goalscoring form.’

Luton’s first home game in the Premier League also saw their fans target Kurt Zouma for the footage which emerged in 2022 of him kicking and slapping his cat. The 28-year-old defender, now wearing the captain’s armband for West Ham, scored their second goal. Like Bowen, he chose to celebrate towards the home support.

‘I don’t know if it fired them up but I do know it was a great ball by James Ward-Prowse and a brilliant header, a great leap,’ Moyes said. ‘It took the game away from them. We were the better team. We should have been further in front.’

Luton felt they deserved a penalty in the fifth minute of stoppage time after a handball by Ward-Prowse. Referee Paul Tierney gave nothing and VAR John Brooks did not intervene.

Manager Rob Edwards insists despite three straight defeats, they believe they will do some damage soon themselves. ‘We’ve just spoken about it in the dressing room,’ Edwards said. ‘West Ham are a very good team but I didn’t see anything to fear and the players feel the same. We’ve got to make sure we are more ruthless when we do get those opportunities. I want to give these amazing supporters some points to cheer about.’
