Kate Garraway has admitted she has accumulted £800,000 in debt, for years of  care provided for her late husband Derek Draper.

As the Good Morning Britain presenter, 56, spoke about the looming debt, she admitted she’s always in ‘survival mode’, following his death.

The political lobbyist died in January aged 56 following a long battle with Covid-19

Speaking to The Times, Kate – who owes between £500,000 to £800,000 – said: ‘Derek’s needs were clearly so great, yet he didn’t warrant funded care — so you think, “If he isn’t getting it, then who is?”

‘To be fair to them, no one’s contacted me since he’s passed away to ask for that. They may well still do, but they haven’t as yet.

Kate Garraway, 56, could have to pay a staggering fee of up to £800,000 for all the care used for her late husband Derek Draper

‘The bigger picture of the further appeals I haven’t addressed yet, because I’m still in survival mode. It’s supposed to be a system that’s meant to catch you if you fall. But actually, it feels like it’s trying to catch you out.’

Derek’s final moments will be reportedly shown in a documentary, that will also capture him talking on camera about his battle for the first time.

He really ‘wanted to have his say’ despite his illness leaving him with very limited speech, according to The Sun.

The touching ITV documentary will capture emotional moments alongside his children and his beloved wife Kate as he bravely fought the disease after four years.

A poignant moment from the documentary’s trailer, shows the former political advisor lying in bed as he wrote down in his notepad.

During a heart-wrenching moment from the clip, Derek says: ‘My name’s Derek Draper, I want you to hear my story.’

The GMB host can be seen sitting on his bed as she asked: ‘You’ve written Covid changed everything. Do you mean for you?,’ as Derek replied: ‘Yes.’

A source told the publication: ‘Derek really wanted to make this documentary and have his say. It was incredibly brave of him to let cameras into his home.’

Speaking with co-host Ed Balls on Good Morning Britain, Kate admitted she ‘can’t quite believe’ that Derek, who died in January, isn’t with her to ‘watch his story’.

‘It’s been pretty emotional actually. Makes you want to jump in the screen and give him a hug.

And with the documentary set to air on Tuesday, Kate previously discussed how it feels to have completed the project, as she confessed it had been ‘pretty emotional’ working on it.

Speaking with co-host Ed Balls on Thursday’s episode of Good Morning Britain, Kate admitted she ‘can’t quite believe’ that Derek isn’t with her to ‘watch his story’.

‘It’s been pretty emotional actually. Makes you want to jump in the screen and give him a hug.

‘You can’t quite believe that he’s not with us to watch his story. But, hopefully, it will be very useful for others who that are going through the same thing. That’s the dream and the wish.’

After viewers watched a trailer for the programme earlier this week, Ed added: ‘It was very moving to hear him speak in [that] clip we played a couple of days ago. Because at the same time, there’s a fragility but also it is absolutely the Derek I’ve known for 30 years.’

Kate agreed as she continued: ‘You’re right, there’s fragility, vulnerability, obviously deep ill-health and damage, but yeah he was his own man until the end.’

The mother-of-two also explained that it was Derek’s decision to make the final documentary in the hope that it will bring a lot of help to people who are also suffering from long-term illness.

She explained: ‘It was his idea to make this and his story, so hopefully as I say, when it’s aired next Tuesday, it will bring a lot of help to a lot of people who are in the situation Derek’s in with long-term illness and those around them that care for them and the professional carers as well.’

Kate previously chronicled the impact of caring for her husband in two other ITV documentaries titled Finding Derek and Caring For Derek.

Kate Garraway: Derek’s Story airs on on Tuesday at 9pm and will be available to stream on ITVX.
