Mysterious 'UFO' lights spotted above London homes has been quickly debunked

Londoners shared videos of bright lights in the night sky above their homes over the weekend, after being left bewildered.

Despite suspicions and theories of UFOs and extraterrestrials appearing on social media after various videos went viral, theories have since been debunked online with a believable explanation.

Londoners spotted strange lights in the sky

The lights were visible in the early hours of Sunday morning for many across south and east London, with residents who could see the lights from their homes taking to social media to share their confusion. Videos shared across social media documented the mysterious lights dancing around in a semi-circle shape.

One TikTok user, @bambiitaz, posted her video three days ago, captioning it “UFO.” She zoomed in on the video, asking the camera: “What is in the sky right now.” The video has since been seen over 390,000 times.

@tacooly similarly shared a video of the lights in the sky as seen from her home. “That’s so scary,” she could be heard saying. “UFO sighting in London at 2 am?” reads the caption, followed by the user claiming she’s packing her bags to leave.

Other videos on TikTok share similar messages of concern over the lights, which continued on for hours, according to various videos. “If that isn’t a UFO then I don’t know,” read one post.

Though you’d be forgiven for immediately assuming that UFOs and aliens are coming to Earth, there’s actually a very likely and normal explanation behind it. The lights are instead suggested to be from West Ham’s London Stadium in Stratford.

A video shared to TikTok shows the stadium with the lights shining into the sky and moving around in the exact pattern as the other videos. The clip is purported to be from Sunday morning, providing an explanation for the mysterious lights that residents were seeing.

The stadium has a state-of-the-art light system with spotlights and LED floodlights that was displayed in a 2021 performance. A popular video shows the lights moving in an almost identical pattern back then too.

It’s currently unclear and unconfirmed exactly why West Ham’s London Stadium would be shining lights at such a surprising time.
