Character: Luke Hobbs in any Fast & Furious movie also featuring Vin Diesel

In August 2016, Dwayne Johnson shook the Fast & Furious world with an Instagram post in which he railed against an unnamed male co-star, later identified as Vin Diesel. Sources told THR the vent session came after Diesel showed up late for his final scene with Johnson in 2017’s The Fate of the Furious.

In the intervening years, Johnson publicly stated he would not appear in the mainline Fast & Furious movies, which star Diesel. (He did star in his own spinoff, Hobbes & Shaw, opposite Jason Statham.)

“I wish them well on Fast 9. And I wish them the best of luck on Fast 10 and Fast 11 and the rest of the Fast & Furious movies they do that will be without me,” Johnson told The Hollywood Reporter in 2021.

Diesel publicly asked Johnson to return for Fast X, and again Johnson said he would not be back, with the actor saying he had already privately told Diesel as much. “I privately spoke with my partners at Universal as well, all of whom were very supportive as they understand the problem,” said Johnson.

Then, there was a surprise. When Fast X premiered in May 2023, Johnson was indeed back in a post-credit scene that will lead up to his return in a new Fast movie that won’t feature Diesel onscreen. But offscreen? Diesel is among its producers.

“Last summer Vin and I put all the past behind us. We’ll lead with brotherhood and resolve — and always take care of the franchise, characters & FANS that we love,” Johnson wrote on social media after the film was announced.

For Universal, the hope is that Johnson and Diesel could be reunited in the upcoming 11th mainline Fast movie that would star Diesel.
