This year’s Berlinale Specials program, the out-of-competition gala section of the Berlin Film Festival, will include a pair of high-octane action movies: Rose Glass’ crime actioner Love Lies Bleeding starring Kristen Stewart, and Korean thriller The Roundup: Punishment from director Heo Myeong-haeng.
Love Lies Bleeding, which co-stars Anna Baryshnikov, Dave Franco, Katy M. O’Brian, Ed Harris and Jena Malone, will have its international premiere in Berlin after its bow in Sundance later this month. The Roundup: Punishment, starring Train to Busan breakout Don Lee, will have its world premiere in Berlin.
Other Berlinale Special highlights, unveiled Monday, include Shikun, the latest drama from Israeli filmmaker Amos Gitai (Kadosh); the documentary project Turn in the Wound, from acclaimed New York auteur Abel Ferrara (Bad Lieutenant), about life in Kyiv since the start of the war in Ukraine; and Supersex, an Italian Netflix drama based on the life of notorious porn star Rocco Siffredi, played by The Eight Mountains actor Alessandro Borghi. All three will have their world premieres in Berlin. As will The Box Man, a new drama from Japanese director Gakuryu Ishii (Labyrinth of Dreams).
French documentarian Nicolas Philibert, whose On the Adamant won best film in Berlin last year, returns to the German capitol with the out-of-competition entry Averroès & Rosa Parks, which is styled as a companion piece to the Golden Bear winner.
Other documentaries getting the Berlinale Special treatment include Made in England: The Films of Powell and Pressburger, directed by David Hinton and narrated by Martin Scorsese, on the legendary British filmmakers Michael Powell and Emeric Pressburger; Agnes Lisa Wegner and Cece Mlay’s The Empty Grave, a look at the efforts by the Tanzanian descendants of those killed by German colonialists in 19th century East Africa to retrieve the remains of their ancestors from Germany; and Exergue – on documenta 14, from Dimitris Athiridis, an 840 minute (!) documentary on art curator Adam Szymczyk’s creation of the documenta 14 art exhibition in 2017.
Berlin will unveil its full competition program Monday, Jan. 22. The 74th Berlinale runs Feb. 15-25.
