Raymond Chaluisant: An off-duty jail officer killed a teen with a toy gun

An 18 years old teenager named Raymond Chaluisant was killed by a gunshot wound on his face at around 1.35 am on Thursday, 21 July.

The incident occurred when an off-duty police officer, Dion Middleton, fired at Raymond in the Bronx near the intersection of the Cross Bronx Expressway and Morris Avenue.

Raymond was found unconscious and unresponsive in his friend’s car, about half a mile from the crime scene, and a toy gun that shoots water pellets was found beside him. He was immediately given medical attention and was transferred to St. Barnabas hospital, where he was declared dead.

Why was Raymond Chaluisant shot?

Dion Middleton allegedly shot Raymond while he sat in the passenger seat of a silver Acura. Since no confession is made from Dion’s side, people assume that the cause behind the shooting of Raymond could be his possession of a toy gun.

Investigators are also digging in the same angle. Dion Middleton was arrested for manslaughter, murder, and criminal possession of a weapon.

Commissioner of Correction officers’ benevolent association, the union representing Dion, has said in a statement that Dion is immediately suspended without pay and will be terminated if found guilty. It is currently unclear whether Dion is represented by an attorney or not.

Reactions to Raymond Chaluisant’s death:

Raymond’s half-sister, Jiraida Esquilin, told a news site that Raymond was going to take part in a water gun fight with his friends on the hot summer day.

Jiraida also said that Raymond’s father had died just six months before his death, and their family was still grieving him; Raymond’s death had come as an utter shock, demanding nothing but justice.
