Philadelphia Eagles receiver A.J. Brown on Sunday solidified his status as one of the NFL‘s premier pass-catchers. He did this by setting a new record for consecutive games with at least 125 receiving yards, breaking a tie with two players — including Calvin Johnson, who still holds the league’s 11-year-old record for receiving yards in a season.

The Eagles needed every yard Brown could muster in Landover, Maryland, as Philadelphia had to huff and puff to defeat the Washington Commanders in Week 8 action. But as he has done so often since his trade from Tennessee, Brown showed he was up to the task — in spectacular fashion, no less.

“Catch of the year” candidate

Among Brown‘s eight catches on Sunday was a one-handed touchdown grab in the second quarter that could rank among the top catches all season when it’s said and done.

With the Eagles trailing 14-3 in the final minute of the second quarter, quarterback Jalen Hurts tossed a pass to the pylon that Brown miraculously secured with one hand — despite blanket coverage from Commanders cornerback Benjamin St-Juste. It was a key play in the game and brought Philadelphia back into it before halftime.

Later, Brown caught a 25-yard touchdown pass from Hurts, tying the score at 17 late in the third quarter. Philadelphia eventually reeled off 21 consecutive points in the fourth quarter on its way to a 38-31 win and a 7-1 start to the season.

A 2,000-yard season is possible

Much of the attention may be focused on Tyreek Hill down in Miami, but Brown is putting up his own challenge to become the NFL‘s first 2,000-yard receiver.

Hill surpassed the 1,000-yard mark during the Dolphins‘ win over the New England Patriots on Sunday, and he is the NFL’s current receiving yards leader, on pace for 2,155 yards over the 17-game season. But Brown is right behind him, ready to capitalize on any slip-up or injury to the Miami superstar.

With his 129-yard haul in Landover, Brown is on course for 1,995 receiving yards — far and away a career high, and a figure good enough to break another of Johnson‘s records. “Megatron” still holds the NFL record for receiving yards in a season with 1,964, but that mark seems destined to fall come the end of the 2023 season.
