Aaron Rodgers has rushed to the defense of Zach Wilson by slamming Joe Namath as the New York Jets legend criticised the 24-year-old quarterback.

The Jets started the 2023/24 NFL season with a thrilling victory over the Buffalo Bills but have since lost to the Dallas Cowboys and the New England Patriots.

Wilson anticipated spending time on the sidelines after the signing of Rodgers from the Green Bay Packers, only for Rodgers to receive a season-ending injury in the first quarter of the opening game.

With the 2021 No.2 pick thrust back into the spotlight, the Jets have now dropped two games and scoring just 10 points in both and slumping to the bottom of the division prompting Rodgers to defend his teammate.

“When we’re not having success, how do we respond? How do we respond to adversity?,” Rodgers said to The Pat McAfee Show. “And that goes to our fan base and former players as well. You’re not helping the cause.”

The defense will hopefully give the youngster a mental lift as the Jets face a tough match-up in Week 4 against the Kansas City Chiefs, and their star QB Patrick Mahomes.

What did Namath say?

Namath was also a QB for the Jets, winning Super Bowl III and becoming MVP of the game.

He played for 11 years in New York and is considered a legend by the franchise, with the organisation retiring his number 12 jersey, so his words carry weight and influence.

He had criticised Wilson‘s performances, questioning the understanding of the position the 24-year-old is playing.

“I’ve seen enough of Zach Wilson, all right? I’ve seen enough,” Namath said on The Michael Kay Show.

“Has quick feet, can throw a little bit, but I don’t believe what’s going on up there.

Namath added that Wilson was “making choices that are not intuitive to the quarterback position.”
