New York Jetsquarterback Aaron Rodgerscame out swinging in defense of his close friend and Jets offensive coordinator, Nathaniel Hackett, amid a heated feud with New Orleans Saints head coach Sean Payton.

The feud ignited after Payton openly criticized Hackett’s coaching abilities during his tenure as the Denver Broncos‘ coach last season. In an interview with USA TODAY Sports, Payton didn’t mince his words, describing Hackett’s performance as potentially one of the worst coaching jobs in NFL history, particularly regarding his handling of star quarterback Russell Wilson.

Rodgers, known for his strong camaraderie with Hackett and their successful collaboration during their time together in Green Bay, took Payton’s comments to heart. In an interview with NFL Network after a Jets practice session, the Jets quarterback didn’t hold back in expressing his surprise and displeasure at Payton’s remarks.

“My love for Hack goes deep, you know, we had some great years together in Green Bay,” Rodgers began, speaking fondly of his friend and offensive coordinator. “Just his approach to it, how he makes it fun, how he cares about the guys, just how he goes about his business with respect, with leadership, with honesty, with integrity.”

It made me feel that bad that someone (Payton) who’s accomplished a lot in the league is that insecure that they have to take another man down to set themselves up for some sort of easy fall if it doesn’t go well for that team this year,” Rodgers passionately declared, defending Hackett’s coaching philosophy and character.

The rift between Payton and Hackett traces back to January when the Jets decided to bring Hackett on board as their offensive coordinator after his departure from the Broncos. Hackett’s presence was a significant factor in Rodgers’ decision to join the New York team, and their reunion sparked optimism for the Jets’ offense.

The tension between the two coaches adds an extra layer of excitement to the upcoming NFL season, particularly when the Jets face off against the Broncos in Week 5. The spotlight will undoubtedly be on Rodgers and Hackett as they seek to prove their worth against Payton’s team.

Jets rally behind Hackett as Rodgers slams Payton’s criticism

Since Rodgers made his statements defending Hackett, other Jets players have rallied behind their offensive coordinator. Offensive tackle Billy Turner, who had worked with Hackett during his time with the Broncos, expressed his disdain for Payton’s remarks on social media, calling him a “F***ing bum” and referencing the controversial #BountyGate scandal.

Jets head coach Robert Saleh also offered unwavering support for Hackett, praising his phenomenal job with the team and emphasizing their successful history together during their time as assistants with the Jacksonville Jaguars.

Following the backlash from his comments, Payton later expressed regret for his harsh words, acknowledging that it was a “mistake.”

As the NFL season unfolds, all eyes will be on the Jets’ offensive performance, with Aaron Rodgers leading the charge under Nathaniel Hackett’s guidance. The feud between Rodgers and Payton will undoubtedly add intensity to the already thrilling world of football, leaving fans eagerly anticipating the showdown between the Jets and the Broncos in Week 5.
