For the first time in what feels like a long time, New York Jets fans are entering a new NFL season filled with optimism about their team. The Jets swung the biggest trade of the offseason, landing Aaron Rodgers from the Green Bay Packers — and Rodgers sounds as if he is preparing to lay the groundwork for years of success at MetLife Stadium.

Speaking in a sitdown interview with CBS New York, Rodgers touched on his NFL future — and it sounds like it might be more good news for Jets fans, many of whom have never seen their team win the Super Bowl.

Rodgers anticipating a long stretch of competitive football

Rodgers admitted that he sees himself as a Jet for longer than just the 2023 season. The future Hall of Fame quarterback’s reworked contract is heavily backloaded and runs through 2024, but Rodgers wants to play past its expiration.

It may seem weird to see Rodgers talking about long-term competitiveness in relation to the Jets. This is a franchise that has only one 10-win season in the past 12 years and has not made the NFL postseason since 2010. New York has not won a division title since 2002, and its lone Super Bowl appearance took place in 1969 — before it joined the NFL.

Passing the torch back to Wilson

In his interview, Rodgers also hyped up Zach Wilson, the former #2 overall pick who has been benched in favor of Rodgers and is now being regarded as the Jets‘ “quarterback of the future.”

Rodgers believes Wilson will take over “for the next 15 years” after the 39-year-old steps away. This would be quarterback stability that the franchise has, quite literally, never experienced.

And Wilson seems excited at the prospect. In a recent media appearance, the former Brigham Young University star admitted he leans on Rodgers a lot and views him as a “big brother.”

If Wilson takes Rodgers’ lessons to heart and develops into a top-flight quarterback himself, then the next decade-plus of Jets football could be very exciting indeed.
