Aaron Rodgers reached out to Kirk Cousins to provide tips for his recovery

Kirk Cousins and Aaron Rodgers were once foes in the NFC North. Now, they are compatriots in recovery.

Rodgers on Tuesday confirmed he has reached out to Cousins following the Minnesota quarterback’s season-ending Achilles tendon rupture. Both signal-callers are recuperating from the same type of injury — Rodgers has been out since Week 1 with an Achilles rupture of his own and is hoping to return for the postseason if his New York Jets make it there.

Rodgers offers support

During his weekly appearance on “The Pat McAfee Show,” Rodgers said his respect for Cousins — a four-time Pro Bowler against whom he has played many times — led him to reach out to the Vikings star after he was carted off during Minnesota‘s win over the Green Bay Packers on Sunday.

“It sucks. It definitely sucks,” Rodgers said. “He was playing really, really well.”

A former Packer himself, Rodgers said he “passed on” all the information he could to Cousins — whose initial timetable rules him out for the remainder of the season, the last one on his contract with Minnesota. He is scheduled to hit free agency in March.

“Because my rehab’s been great, because I feel so good, obviously people have been interested in what I’m doing, and I’ve just been passing along what’s been working for me,” Rodgers explained.

Could Cousins return for the playoffs?

While Cousins and Rodgers both suffered Achilles injuries, the nature of the two ruptures could mean significantly-different recovery processes.

Rodgers injured his non-dominant left leg, meaning there is slightly more optimism that the 39-year-old could make a comeback before the end of the 2023 season. Cousins’ injury, to his right side, could lead to a tougher road back for the 35-year-old.

The Vikings on Tuesday seemed to prepare for the likelihood that Cousins will not return in 2023. Minnesota acquired quarterback Joshua Dobbs from the Arizona Cardinals ahead of the trade deadline, and he will compete with Jaren Hall for starting duties.
