Well, that’s something you don’t see very often. Steven May has kicked a goal.

The key defender’s first since 2020 and boy, did he love it. I don’t know if I’ve ever seen him so excited – that goes for Jake Lever watching from behind the glass, too.

The whole team rightfully got around him. You’d expect Dees staff are going to hear all about that all week.

This from Andrew Wu, at the MCG:

Defenders love nothing more than kicking goals. We saw Alex Pearce kick a clutch goal the other night against Collingwood, now it’s Steven May’s turn. This one is not as significant, coming with the Dees well in front, but was no less enjoyable for May, who celebrated like a striker who had scored. His goal came from a 50-metre penalty against Max King, for incorrectly standing the mark in the centre. It’s May’s first goal since round 15, 2020, and the 24th in his 226-game career.

That was a fun moment for Dees fans.

Narrm went end to end, launching from half-back through Harrison Petty where the ball sailed towards goals.

Christian Petracca picked up the fast bouncing ball and slotted it through the big sticks. The Dees have now kicked 12 goals to five, while the Saints have booted just the one major since half-time.

Things are looking good for Narrm as they head into the final term 41 points up, but this is footy, anything could still happen.

Let’s see if Euro-Yroke can find a (much-needed) spark.

The Dees started the third quarter slowly but piled on the goals late, the last two through Jack Viney and Kysaiah Pickett.

Just before the last change, Euro-Yroke have activated their sub with Cooper Sharman on for Lance Collard. You’d think Ross Lyon would be hoping Sharman’s fresh legs can give them some oomph as they struggle against the top-eight looking side.

It hasn’t been a great afternoon for the Saints’ forward line but Jack Higgins has finally popped one through, his first of the game.

Higgins got out the back of his opponent to take the grab, and then finished off the set shot.

It’s Euro-Yroke first goal this quarter, as they trail Narrm by 29 points.

The Dees are putting some distance now between themselves and the Saints.

It’s not always pretty, but they’re getting on top in the midfield and the Saints may have fired their best shot. Max King had a chance to draw the Saints within two kicks but his shot from long range missed.

Since then, the Dees have taken the ball up the other end for a goal to Jacob Van Rooyen, and one from the centre bounce to Christian Petracca.

Kade Chandler “marked” a centering chiseler from Ed Langdon and converted from 30 out. I’m not sure Chandler would be winning any “spirit of cricket” awards.

His diving mark appeared to have touched grass, though the umpire was happy enough to pay it.

Jacob van Rooyen couldn’t quite hold on to the mark after Jack Viney had a penetrating kick deep into the Dees’ forward 50. But it didn’t matter. Van Rooyen got hands to it and managed to get boot to ball.

Just over a minute later, Christian Petracca backed it up with his first goal of the game. Then, if you blinked you might have missed it, as Kade Chandler made it four unanswered goals to the Dees this quarter.

You can now definitively ring the alarm bells for Euro-Yroke.

And that’s the first goal of the second half, eight minutes into the third quarter. It came from Max Gawn, who’s now gone off for a bit of a well-deserved break.

The goal gives Narrm just a little bit of breathing room, but the margin is still within striking range for Euro-Yroke. There is just three kicks in it.

And Saint Anthony Caminiti has got the ball rolling for this third quarter with another behind, which feels a bit on theme for this game.

The Hawks powered away from last year’s grand finalists early before withstanding a Lions comeback to win 15.10 (100) to 10.15 (75) on Sunday for their fourth victory of the season. Despite not playing finals since 2018, Hawthorn have won five straight matches against the Lions dating back to 2020.

The Lions have beaten all 16 other AFL teams at least once during the past five seasons, but Hawthorn have proved to be a bogey side for Lions coach Chris Fagan – a former Hawks football boss.

Hawthorn bury last week’s demons
James Worpel and Will Day starred in the midfield for Hawthorn, while captain James Sicily was a rock in defence as the Lions’ forward line functioned poorly. After Brisbane kicked the first goal, Hawthorn raced out to a 35-point lead midway through the second term.

The Lions cut the deficit to just three points moments before the final break, but were left to rue kicking 3.7 during a third quarter they dominated in general play.

Hawthorn booted the first three goals of the final quarter to break the Lions’ spirit. The victory comes just seven days after Hawthorn suffered a heartbreaking loss at the death after they had been up by 41 points against Port Adelaide.

Gunston salts Brisbane’s wound
The result leaves the Lions’ campaign reeling with a 4-1-6 record and sitting in 12th place on the ladder heading into the bye after playing finals for the past five seasons.

After kicking five goals last week in a 119-point mauling of Richmond, livewire Brisbane forward Charlie Cameron’s radar was off on Sunday as he finished with 1.3 and one shot that went out on the full in a costly performance.

Former Hawthorn tall Brandon Ryan had a dream start in his Lions debut, slotting the first goal of the match. But Hawthorn premiership hero Jack Gunston – who spent one season with the Lions last year before returning to Waverley Park – turned back the clock with a vital four-goal performance, including the sealer with four minutes left.

Hawthorn will host Adelaide at the MCG next Saturday as they continue their steady build under coach Sam Mitchell.

The Lions will lick their wounds with a bye in round 12 before trying to salvage something from the season whey play the Western Bulldogs back at Marvel Stadium in round 13.
